Bitcoin traded near $85,300 on October 6 after moving between roughly $85,050 and $86,645 during the session. The price recovery is real, but the underlying demand picture is uneven: U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded an estimated $89.8 million net outflow on October 5 after positive flows on October 1 and 2.

ETF demand is becoming more selective

Farside Investors reported $102.7 million of net inflows on October 1 and $189.9 million on October 2, followed by an $89.8 million outflow on October 5. BlackRock's IBIT still attracted $69.9 million on October 5, while Fidelity's FBTC and Ark's ARKB recorded withdrawals. The split suggests that the regulated demand channel remains active, but headline totals can conceal sharp differences among funds.

Custody rules could broaden institutional access

On October 1, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission proposed a tailored custody framework for registered investment advisers and regulated funds. The proposal would permit state trust companies as custodians and allow limited self-custody when no permitted custodian is available, subject to conditions and periodic review.

This is a proposal, not a final rule. The 60-day public-comment period and the eventual final text matter because operational requirements, audit costs and eligible-custodian definitions could affect which institutions can hold crypto assets and at what cost.

Bullish and bearish readings

The bullish case is that regulated custody options and persistent ETF participation lower access barriers for professional investors. The bearish case is that recent demand is narrow, Bitcoin remains sensitive to U.S. yields and dollar liquidity, and policy details may take time to translate into deployable capital.

Bitcoin also remains well below its prior record, so the current move should be assessed as a recovery rather than proof of a new sustained uptrend. Thin liquidity can amplify both breakouts and reversals.

What investors should monitor

  • Daily ETF flows: especially whether inflows broaden beyond one issuer.
  • Market depth and leverage: funding rates, open interest and liquidation clusters.
  • Macro liquidity: U.S. real yields, the dollar and Federal Reserve expectations.
  • SEC rulemaking: comment-period feedback and changes to the final custody framework.
